Tasted three times from bottle in January, the 1996 merited a slightly higher score on one occasion, but my policy is to go with the more conservative rating. The wine exhibits a dark plum color, and a complex nose of roasted herbs, Asian spices, earth, and sweet black cherry fruit. A refined claret, with excellent concentration, a sweet mid-palate, and moderate tannin in the finish, it is a finesse-styled Pomerol. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016.

Vieux Château Certan
Owner: Famille Thienpont
Size: 14 hectares
Grape Variety: 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 60% Merlot
About Vieux Château Certan...
The Vieux Château Certan vineyards are surrounded by famous neighbours such as Petrus, La Conseillante, L'Evangile... Charles de Bousquet purchased the property in 1858 and undertakes to rebuild the castle. Its present owners, the Thienpont family, who have later on lifted Le Pin to unprecedented heights, enter the scene in 1924 with Georges Thienpont. Today Georges’ grandson, Alexander, is captain of the ship. Following the manual harvesting of the grapes, vinification is performed in a meticulous manner, per grape variety, in oak barrels. Subsequently the wine matures 18 to 22 months in new wooden casks. Vieux Château Certan is less powerful than the classic Pomerol wines, but acquires an extreme finesse over the years.
